Someone once told me, “If a sermon is good enough to be preached once, it’s good enough to be preached twice!” I have found this to be true when it comes to bulletin articles or social media posts as well. Our friend and brother Steve Higginbotham, posted something worthwhile a few years ago regarding how Christians “use” social media. I have adapted his message to fit in this space. As Steve used to say, “Give it some thought.”
Facebook Etiquette for Christians
1. Don’t criticize the church or your brethren.
2. Don’t constantly whine.
3. Don’t take cryptic “pot shots” at some unnamed person who, when they read your post, will know you’re talking about them.
4. Think before you post.
5. Don’t post inappropriate pictures.
6. Do some self-evaluation.
7. Don’t use Facebook as an escape from reality.
8. Be kind.
9. Don’t gossip.
10. And finally, use it for good.
Brother Steve goes on to remind us to:
1. “Tell it not on Facebook. After all, Jesus has a better way of dealing with it, doesn’t he? (Matthew 18:15-17).”
2. “Listen, if you’re a Christian, regardless of what your problems are, your blessings infinitely exceed your trials. “
3. “If we would do these things, Facebook would be a better place. Come to think of it, if we would do these things the world would be a better place. “
While this is only sampling of Steve’s article/post, the content is very good and should be a reminder to all of us. I appreciate Steve allowing me to use a portion of his work! May we read this before we post!
