Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.
Do we regard ourselves as poor or not having enough in relation to money, time, & service to God? Scripture tells us when we give all we have to the Kingdom, we should not fret that we will not do without. Psalm 37:25 says I have been young and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread. God will remove barriers if we will serve and give to the Kingdom.
What did the widow give? Verse 44 says she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood. She trusted in the Lord to take care of her even though she gave all she had.
How did the widow give? The widow gave of her own self first by doing the will of the Father (Matt. 7:21). She gave cheerfully (2 Cor. 9:7).
Why did the widow give? The widow gave her all because she was selfless & because she was grateful because of the Father’s blessings (James1:17).
We are being taught about giving in this passage but we learn more than that, we learn we are to give our best when it comes to the church. Are we like the widow?
