Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, likes to be in the spotlight.
One of his crowning achievements was opening a new stadium 15 years ago. Obviously, it is state of the art. It has all the bells and whistles like a retractable roof and one of the largest video boards/screens in all of sports. It even has an art museum inside – in a football stadium!
At the time, it was one of the first structures of its ilk to cost over $1 billion to construct.
The home of the Cowboys has been in the news again lately. This time, because of the Sun.
When games are played there in the afternoon, the Sun comes streaming in through the huge windows that encircle the stadium (we are not talking about the roof).
In their most recent home game, CeeDee Lamb was wide open in the endzone for a touchdown…Cooper Rush zipped a pass to him…but he never saw it. He was blinded by the Sun.
After the game, Lamb was very vocal about how much he wanted the curtains to be closed so that the Sun would no longer be an issue. He isn’t alone. Other players, coaches, commentators, fans, etc. have been begging Jerry to close the curtains for afternoon games.
Other events (concerts, other sports, etc.) all close the curtains.
Jerry remains adamant. He even gets angry if he is questioned about it.
What could possibly keep him from considering closing the curtains?
Based upon his reactions to being questioned, the only explanation I can see is PRIDE.
His pride will not allow him to admit he has made a mistake. Especially now that all this time has passed, he is dug in and holding on.
Sometimes we need to admit we were wrong. Sometimes we need to move on and do what is best for everyone involved.
Prov. 11:2 “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.”
Prov. 16:5 “Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished.”
Prov. 16:18 “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Prov. 29:23 “One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.”
May we not be blinded by our own foolish pride!
Rather than being blinded by the Sun, sometimes we need to close the curtains.
