Have you heard about Kepler-452b? Maybe you’ve seen the headlines recently that read something like this: NASA discovers Earth-like planet orbiting “cousin” of Sun.
The idea is to emphasize just how un-special we really are. If we exist by complete accident…if we owe our existence to time and chance…it would not be outside the realm of possibility that other planets and life evolved also. We are not unique or special.
However, I would caution you to read such headlines with a critical and discerning mind that has been informed by Scripture as well as science. Currently, there is no evidence that suggests Kepler-452b can sustain life. In fact, it is much more likely that it is closer to Venus in makeup (which means that it can not sustain life).
To date, all available evidence points to Earth being the only habitable planet.
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. (Psalm 19:1-5)
