Our darkest moments are when we have a “loss” in our life. It does not matter if we are expecting this loss or not, we still feel overwhelmed, hurt, disappointed, and alone. Loss in our life can take the form of losing a dear friend or family member to death, losing our home due to a tragedy such as a fire. Additionally, our loss may derive from having to end a relationship with a friend, spouse, or family member. Loss can be felt physically with declining health. Loss can be felt financially when a job is lost or income no longer exists. Loss can be felt by a child whose parent no longer wants to keep the family together. Loss in turn causes us “grief.”
Ron and Don William, in their book entitled Walking With Those Who Weep, A Guide To Grief Support, tells us, “Of all the things that we experience in this life, grief is that one UNIVERSAL emotion that will be felt by every human being. Grief is not something that people can choose to avoid, shun, or escape.”
Isaiah 53:3, referring to Jesus, says, “He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him: He was despised and we did not esteem Him.” We know that Jesus felt the same emotions we do: tiredness, anger, hunger, thirst, tears, and the frustration of pain.
We have an opportunity to understand, learn, and discuss grief/loss on March 28th & 29th, here at South Green St. church of Christ. We are planning to have Saturday sessions and classes on Sunday addressing these topics. Ron & Don Williams will be presenting classes and a lesson in relation to understanding & dealing with grief, all with a focus on Jesus. We will be publishing more details soon. Please mark your calendar.
