I am thankful each day to rise and participate in life. However, I am seeing more and more of my family, friends, and those who have meant so much to me pass away. We know grief and death are part of life (Hebrews 9:27), but I think we all yearn to spend more time with those we have loved and devoted time to. We are left behind. What are we to do? Our connection with the one we are missing will dictate our reaction. Our level of grief mirrors the level of our love. We know life doesn’t have a rewind button; we can find ways to remember and honor our beloved family & friends while doing God’s will.
1. Live for Christ. Philippians 1:21 says For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. As we long to talk with those who have gone on before us, let us focus on all the love, comfort, and hope Christ offers us during our time of trial. While we deal with the void of a loss, Christ can fill our need if we cling to Him.
2. Redeem the time. Ephesians 5:16-18 says redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit. As we deal with the loss of someone we cherish and wonder what to do next, our time is well spent in constantly seeking what the Lord’s will is. Our loss will be softened if we seek to share Jesus with others and grow closer to Him.
3. Evaluate our priorities. Romans 12:2 says And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Knowing life is like a vapor should motivate us to seek opportunities to share the Gospel as we remember those who have left this world.
