Throughout all sporting events there is a set playing time that is predetermined for the competition to be completed. The individuals or teams compete to see who is victorious in this set time. In most of these sporting events, if at the end of the competition the individuals or teams are tied in score, there will be extra time for competition. There is overtime in basketball, hockey, & football, extra innings in baseball, and extra time in soccer. This time is usually used to determine the winner of the competition. Even though the teams/individuals have competed for the determined length of time, they still have time to win the competition.
In life we are given a length of time here on earth to live. Unlike the sporting events, we don’t know the determined length of our life. Our time here on earth is short lived compared to all of eternity. In the book of James our life is described as a mist.
James 4:14 “yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”
We do have the responsibility to “compete” in this life. Our so-called competition is against the world and living for Christ. We are called to live for Christ and follow the commands that are in His Word. We live our lives each and everyday. Our choice each day is to live for Him or to live for the world. Once our life is over, we will be judged on how we have lived
Acts 17:31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed…
We will have had time to make the right choices in our life. We will have had the time to believe in God, repent of our sins, confess Jesus as the Son of God, and to have our sins washed away through baptism. There will be NO overtime, NO extra time or NO extra innings in our life. Once our lives have come to an end or Jesus returns a second time, our time to act will have come and gone. We must act NOW!
