It occurs to me that there are some significant similarities between casting a vote in the democratic process and in living the Christian life. Casting a vote is much more than merely marking a piece of paper and subsequently placing it in the proper receptacle. Similarly, living the Christian life is much more than simply getting up, going to work each day and “being nice” to people.
To place a vote is to take a stand with (to align oneself with) some person or policy.
· To live the Christian life is to boldly align oneself with Jesus. (Matt. 10:32)
To place a vote is to declare what is important to you.
· To live the Christian life is to make it plain that Jesus, His Church, and His Word are of vital importance to us. (Heb. 11:14; John 14:15)
To place a vote is to attempt to move whole communities, nations, etc. in a certain direction.
· To live the Christian life is to humbly and lovingly do everything we know to do to mold ourselves and our neighbors into the image of Jesus. (Matt. 28:19-20; Col. 3:10)
Principles such as these should be remembered daily—not just every four years.
