Right Here, Right Now
Welp, as of yesterday, Super Bowl LVII is set. The Eagles will play the Chiefs in Glendale, AZ.
Such got me thinking about past Super Bowls and the teams and personalities that have competed in the game.
In the early 90’s, the Buffalo Bills went to four straight championship games (1990—1993).
I am not a Bills fan at all. Never have been. Don’t guess I ever will be. However, the Bills have a tradition that I really appreciate. One part of what makes sports in general so great are the various traditions. The acts, chants, and inside information that bonds groups together and motivates teams to achieve more.
Back when Marv Levy was coaching the Bills to such success, as he was seeking to inspire the men to do some thing great, he asked his team a question just before kickoff:
“Where else would you rather be than right here, right now?”
They had practiced and worked for countless hours. The crowd was going bananas in the stands screaming and cheering. The television crews were set up and recording. The opposing team was hyped up and ready to try and destroy the home team.
It was a moment of high drama and coach Levy made his point. This was what it was all about! This is what they had worked so hard for! Now was the time to show out! Now was the time to reap the reward brought about by their diligent preparation.
To this day, the “right here, right now” phrase is part of every Buffalo home game and a mantra for all Bills players and fans alike.
I love it!
And, as a Christian, I can see the merit and importance of asking myself and my brothers and sisters the same question.
On a Sunday morning, as the saints gather to pray, sing, study, give, and commune—where else would I rather be than right here, right now…engaged in Christian fellowship with the family of God? No ballpark, golf course, lake, amusement park, restaurant, job, vacation, et. al. competes with corporate worship. This is where I want to be!
On Judgment Day, as the Lord is saying, “Well done good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord”—where else would I rather be than right here, right now…enjoying the embrace of my Lord as He wipes away any and all tears and assures me that all the wicked, hurtful things of the old earth have passed away? No reward competes with dwelling in the presence of God for eternity. This is where I want to be!
What about you? Where else would you rather be?
