“I want this.” “I want that.” “I think I need this or that.” These are all quotes that we say when some item or product catches our eye. Contentment is the concept of being happy or pleased with what we have in our life. Being content is often a struggle for people in today’s world. We want to “Keep Up With the Jones” as the old saying goes.
Lack of contentment can be a major factor in unhappiness, depression, and living an unsatisfactory life. Social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snap Chat, etc.) are all proving to aide in the lack of contentment in lives today. We compare our lives to the things that we see on social media from others. But we are often comparing a “behind the scenes” look to other’s “highlight reel.”
2 Corinthians 10:12 Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.
There are many different types of contentment: financial, relationship, circumstantial, etc. All these occur when we are comparing ourselves to others around us. But we were not created to compare ourselves with others.
We are always trying to achieve, conquer, and accumulate more and more. We chase after one thing, but when we achieve/get it, we are not satisfied. Then we move on to the next “thing.” This is a recurring process. Material things will never satisfy the longing and need we have for Christ.
What we really need to be seeking is Christ Jesus. Look for the blessings that God has already blessed you with. Not the things you don’t have.
