Last Sunday afternoon, I walked for about forty minutes at home. It was a nice, brisk fall afternoon. I finished up walking as the darkness was moving in on our part of the world. As the wind blew, I could see out of the corner of my eye a swing in a tree we put up for Ellie swinging in the wind, empty. I am a reflective person, and I’m always thinking about days gone by in all areas of life. Seeing this swing was no different. I began to think about how fast our kids have grown and contemplate how I have spent my time over the last several years.
James tells us life is a vapor (James 4:14). We know life can pass us by! How we spend our days is how we spend our lives. The most important thing we can do is strive to submit our life to Christ and be pleasing to God. Godly living allows us to not just count our days, but to make our days count. We want to grow closer to Christ as we point others to Him. Daily living is made better by Godly living:
Godliness is possible II Peter 1:3
Grow in grace/knowledge II Peter 3:18
Godliness is contentment I Timothy 6:6
As we think of days gone by, let us think of days coming our way. As we prepare for eternity, if we obey Jesus, the rest of our life is the best of our life. We can think about the past but let us focus on the future!
