We have everything we need. We have the final word from God. We should not be on the hunt for new revelation. We should not be in the business of changing or “updating” the message that has been received.
“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence, by which He has granted to us His precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.” (2 Peter 1:3-4)
The Bible is the Word of God.
It is not just that the Bible contains the word of God…
It is not just that the Bible becomes the word of God when we have some type of experience or event…
This matters because the authority of God’s word resides in the written text – the words, sentences, and paragraphs. It is not our experience that determines the truth. It is God who has handed down the truth to us (1 Thess. 2:13; 2 Thess. 2:15; Jude 1:3).
So many don’t want there to be a stable and fixed meaning in Scripture. If Scripture is pliable and can be changed, then Christians can ensure we are always on the “right side of history” by changing doctrines and ideas to fit in with popular culture.
But not only is that a pathetic and unprincipled way to live, it is actually rebellious and sinful. Changing the message of Scripture does not honor our neighbor, it leads them astray and it dishonors God.
The Lord has spoken.
We must conform our lives to His message – not change His message to fit our lives.
“The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.” (John 12:48)
