The “holiday season” is in full swing. Thanksgiving is behind us and Christmas is right around the corner. It is good to stop and count blessings. It is fun to give and receive presents. Thus it is easy to get caught up in the spirit of the day. But let us consider something different.
From his 1941 speech called The Weight of Glory, C.S. Lewis said this:
If we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.
Don’t settle for what this world has to offer! Strive for something more! Something greater!
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. (Colossians 3:1-4)
If our thanksgiving does not center on Jesus, we are far too easily pleased.
If our most treasured gifts do not center on Jesus, we are far too easily pleased.
