“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”
(Luke 22:31-32) A number of important truths are revealed in this statement from Jesus to Simon Peter.
What we learn about Satan:
· He really is looking for ways to destroy us (1 Pet. 5:8; Job 1:11; 2:5). He desires for us to give in when times get difficult. He wants to separate us—from each other—from God.
· The good news—he is in a position of weakness!
· He can be resisted! (1 Pet. 5:9; James 4:7; Eph. 6:11)
· He does not get to decide our destiny—we don’t have to give in!
What we learn about Jesus:
· He thinks about us—we are on His heart/mind. (cf. Ps. 8:3-4; 139:6)
· He intercedes for us. (cf. Rom. 8:34; Heb. 7:25)
· He offers second chances. (Luke 13:3, 5; 15:17; Acts 3:19)
Satan may be asking to have us, but Jesus is interceding for us! Satan can make all the intimidating demands he wants…he does not get to rule over us unless we allow him to do so! Let us be thankful for the love, mercy, protection, and provision of Jesus!
