I attended a funeral for one of my first cousins on a cold afternoon a few years ago. The preacher who officiated the funeral also offered remarks at the graveside. As he began talking at the cemetery he said, “I wonder what the weather will be like on the day of my funeral. I have often thought who will be there and what will be said.” As he said these words, he stared off for a moment in the face of a cold breeze.
The timing of his comments was very poignant and made an impression on me. Since that time, I too, have reflected on the day of my funeral and what it will be like. But more deeply, I have thought about the first day I will not be present on earth any longer. Regardless of our differences, this is one event we all share (Heb. 9:27). Christians desire to leave the influence of Christ behind. May it be said of us our influence provided light in a dark world (Matt. 5:16). May our name be valued in way that is pleasing to God (Eccl. 7:1). May it be said our conduct was worth mentioning (I Pet. 1:15).
Revelation 14:13 says Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me. Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them. The day after our death will be filled with many emotions. Let the grief of others be subdued because of our faithfulness.
